PERSONAL RECOVERY AND SOBER SOCIAL SCENE

As a person in recovery, personal wellness is VERY important to me, and how I maintain my personal wellness bleeds into my attitude and well-being.  For example, I’m currently a single dad with one full time 16 month old and one part time 8 year old, and have many other responsibilities in life. I am a very busy person attempting to work a program of recovery, work full time, be a dad, a musician, and live a healthy life (healthy eating staying as physically active as possible while still tending to other responsibilities).   This is a juggling act that I by no means do perfectly.  The important thing is that I genuinely attempt to do this, and that I am aware of what I may or may not be doing for my personal wellness -- things such as, actively working my 12 step program, make sure I’m drinking enough water, eating right (you are what you eat!), getting to the gym at least once a week, and keeping my brain stimulated with writing music. With that being said, I have had a bit of time to construct my “routine”.   Right now I feel like I have a pretty decent formula to being content happy and healthy.   Sometimes it’s up and down, but it wasn’t always like this.

When a person first steps into the unknown foreign world of “sobriety”, often times it’s years of using leading up to this point. We have no idea who we are, what we like to do or what we want out of life. Things that may seem “simple”,  such as basic personal hygiene, may be completely foreign concept. Our brains are often thinking “I got high for 15 years! What do I do now!? What do I do with my hands!?  Who am I supposed to hang out with?  When anything and everything was in some way associated with drugs, it is hard to know what to do to keep yourself occupied or to even how to have fun. This is exactly why The Virtue Center started Sober Social Scene. We wanted an easy accessible way for clients or anyone in the community to have good CLEAN fun. We provide snacks, a movie from a projector, board games, family fun video games, and a way to connect with other people in recovery.   Please come join us and bring a friend or family member.  For more information, email me at cklusmeyer@thevirtuecenter.org or call 321-0022.  Hope to see you there!
