FINDING INSPIRATION

Since the beginning of the pandemic and as social issues continue to rise, we are have a unique opportunity to make positive change in our society.  Perhaps most importantly, it has illuminated the social divide that we already knew existed. Most of the people with whom I work are uncertain about what role they play in society or are resigned to the inevitable crush of systemic racism, low socio-economic status, low education, and family cycles of crime, poverty, ignorance and substance use/mental health issues. These are the people who were first to lose their jobs and go into almost immediate financial crisis. They have the least access to affordable health care and are dealing with multiple issues that demonstrate how hard they have to work in order to keep their heads above water.

AND IN THE MIDST OF ALL THIS, PEOPLE ARE GETTING CLEAN.

They are working extremely hard to change their lives and thereby changing the lives of those who love them. With limited access to treatment during a time when mental health issues are escalating across the country, people are overcoming isolation, fear and anxiety to change their lives.  Positive changes are possible if we are willing to listen and learn to one another.  A great way to learn is from the courageous people with whom I work and let them be the spirit that creates change.
